Rebel baseball off and running

McKenzie scrimmages Bethel JV Saturday

By JIM STEELE

With the unpredicatable weather and a youthful squad, outdoor time for the McKenzie High School baseball team is at a premium.

So when the Rebels can take advantage of decent weather, they will. And they did this past weekend with scrimmages with Trenton and Bethel College's junior varsity. The great thing among the many good things that went on this weekend is that the Rebs got in a lot of innings.

Saturday, against BC's JV team, the Rebels and Wildcats battled for 12 innings and a lot of players got a lot of work.

"It was a good day for us," said second-year MHS baseball coach Jeremy Maddox. "We tried to get people at-bats and we tried to get as many people in the field as we could to get experience."

The Rebs and 'Cats dueled for 12 innings on Saturday and keeping score wasn't of primary importance. Getting swings against different, live arms and playing someone else was key.

"The first six innings we played the older guys, the last six innings we played the younger guys," said Maddox. "We got to put six or seven people on the hill and we were seeing live hitters."

For high school teams this time of year is critical. Pitching is always ahead of hitting when starting out and it's no different for the Rebels this year. And playing Bethel, which has had the benefit of a fall practice and been working at baseball since returning from the Christmas break, gave the Rebels a chance to see where they need to be.

"It was good for our kids to play a team like Bethel, that's obviously been playing a lot longer than we have this year," said Maddox. "It was good for our kids to play a team like that, to see live pitching and to get chances in the field and overall, I think we did a good job."

Maddox didn't stress so much the strategies of the game, e.g., hit-and-run, bunting, sacrificing, things like that. He basically wanted to give his players a chance to swing away.

"In a game like this, we needed to take some swings, so we didn't do a lot of the small-ball things we would ordinarily do during games," Maddox said.

The Rebels face Gleason in a scrimmage on Monday for the first of three this coming week. MHS will play the BC junior varsity again noon next Saturday at Wildcat Field.
