BRUCETON - McKenzie senior lineman Austin Winstead wasn't surprised as he looked at the scoreboard on the other side of Herndon Stadium.
McKenzie 35, Bruceton 0. The Rebels go 2-0 and 1-0 in Region 7A.
To some, that result was stunning, but not to Winstead nor to many of his teammates.
"I knew it was going to be a shutout from the beginning," he said. "We just whooped them up front and I believe that was the difference."
He wasn't the only one in red and gray who thought McKenzie would dispatch the Tigers and somewhat easily. Tyler Reeder had an inkling Monday when the Rebels returned to the practice field.
"When we were getting ready for Camden, we didn't practice hard," said Reeder, team captain and all-state linebacker. "It was better against Dresden."
This week?
"The tempo was up at practice; there was no walking, everybody was running to where they needed to be," Reeder said. "Everybody was wanting to learn and wanting to improve."
"There was no way we were going to get unfocused," said senior lineman Josh Rhoads. "I think we progressed mentally and physically."
Clint Kee echoed similar sentiments.
"I'm not really surprised. I don't think anyone had any doubts at all" he said with quiet confidence. "I could tell the way we practiced. Now we have two shutouts in a row and that's big."
Kyle Kirk, who caught the first TD pass of the night, said practice was a key, but so was determination.
"We practiced real hard everyday and we knew we couldn't let up," said Kirk. "We all have heart and all I can say is we came out and played our game 110 percent and never let down."
