The Syracuse Nationals topped the Ft. Wayne Pistons for the NBA championship when McKenzie last knocked off Huntingdon in back-to-back seasons.
The year was 1955. Fabled baseball pitcher Cy Young was even still alive.
Fast forward to 2007. The McKenzie Rebels followed up its 31-17 victory at Huntingdon last year with a 28-19 victory this season. Last year, the Rebels had a rather effervescent celebration at Paul Ward Stadium that lingered for quite some time. This year's celebration was big, but a bit more subdued. Perhaps it's as if the Rebels expected to beat Huntingdon for a change. Still, a victory over the Mustangs for those clad in red and gray anytime it comes.
McKenzie senior Clint Kee savored the victory.
"It feels great and it's a big win for us," he said. "This is a big step for our program."
Senior captain Tyler Reeder said this puts the Rebel program on the radar screen.
"It feels good and now everybody knows we can do it," he said. "We're a good team, a good program, but now we can't let it go to our head and we can't let down."
A letdown almost proved to be disastrous in the second half when Huntingdon tailback Matt Weathers got loose for a 64-yard TD run.
"Huntingdon is a good team," Reeder said. "You have to play good defense and we weren't ready at the start of the second half. Weathers is capable of breaking it."
"Huntingdon wanted revenge tonight; they wanted to beat us," said senior Shabree Payne. "Both teams had something to prove tonight. Our mental state was the biggest challenge. We came out and scored right away and that hurt them bad."
Quarterback Derek Carr agreed.
"We knew it was over when we went on our first drive and scored. We got that fourth down and I knew it was over," he said. "Winning back to back is great. It's amazing. Huntingdon had something to prove and we came out fired up and ready to go."
McKenzie put itself in a couple of holes, but managed to dig out of them.
"That's the way our team is," Carr said. "We fight and never quit."
MHS coach Wade Comer said the Rebels weren't anxious during preparation for this game.
"We went about our normal business this week," said Comer. "We were relaxed focused and our first drive showed that. This was a big game for us and another big step."
