MURFREESBORO - McKenzie trailed South Pittsburg 21-0 early in the second quarter of the Class A state championship game and was looking for anything to hang its hat on.
It seemed that the Rebels had settled down and were starting to move the football. They had marched down to the Pirate 11 in the first half, but couldn't score, but they were moving. On the Rebels first possession of the second frame, MHS senior quarterback Derek Carr found Rusty Chapman up the middle for a gain. Chapman twisted, turned, spun and tried to get the most out of the reception.
When he landed, both knees on the ground and clearly down, he reached the ball forward to finesse for those extra yards. The ball squirted loose. One official spotted where Chapman was down. About that time, South Pittsburg's Terrell Robinson scooped up the football and scampered 26 yards for the score. Replay evidence suggests that Chapman was down at least three seconds before the ball came loose. Officials looked at each other waiting for someone to take the lead. There was no whistle.
Only when Robinson started to streak toward the end zone did the official's bean bag come out to mark the spot. One can't unring the bell and the TD stood. Even the TV announcers said, "It seems South Pittsburg has a 12th man and he's wearing stripes."
Nobody will ever know if McKenzie could have scored on the drive, but if it had, the Rebels would have had a more-manageable two-score deficit than an almost-insurmountable four-score deficit.
"I thought I was down," said Chapman, who came off the turf in disbelief when there was no whistle. "When that happened, it was like a kick in the gut, I never expected for something like that to happen."
"It killed us," said a dejected Carr. "That was a contrvoversial play. We had to come out and score and they got the call and they scored. It killed us."
South Pittsburg coach Vic Grider said that play was a pivotal point in the game.
"When he scopped up that fumble, that play was huge," he said.
McKenzie football coach Wade Comer said that play was big, but there was more to the 52-20 loss than that one play.
"The momentum flipped to their side," said Comer. "That call didn't beat us; we just didn't make plays and they did."
