SELMER - Despite sweltering heat and insufferable humidity, McKenzie High School's football team took part in its first scrimmage of fhe pre-season here again McNairy Central Friday.
The verdict? There was some good and some bad, but most importantly, the Rebels have a jumping off point for the rest of the pre-season. The Rebs and Bobcats ended their pre-season skirmish with a 2-2 tie.
"We played all right on defense, but offensively, we didn't execute as well as I wanted us to," McKenzie football coach Wade Comer said. "I thought the effort was good and we kept fighting. I was pleased with that."
Juniors Jake Johnson and Austin McKinney scored touchdowns for the Rebels. They maintained a 2-1 lead in the scrimmage for most of the afternoon until McNairy Central tacked on a late score to at least preserve a tie.
"We had a lot of hiccups as far as execution goes," Comer said. "With the people we had in there on defense, I was pleased. They did pretty good."
Quinton Bowden and Keon Williams, two projected starters, were out for family reasons.
"Offensively, we had a few good plays and a few not-so-good plays," Comer said. "We just need more consistency."
The coach said McKinney, the Rebel quarterback, had a good effort.
"He did a good job, but it's a learning experience for him," Comer said. "Jake Johnson and Jacob Fussell had good games on offense and defense."
Fussell forced a fumble and the Rebels were very physical on defense. The Rebel passing game showed some positive signs, but also was inconsistent.
"We had a few missed assignments, but I thought we threw it okay," Comer said. "When we blocked and had some protection, we looked good."
The Rebels won't scrimmage again until Aug. 13 when Dyersburg comes to town for a 4 p.m. battle. That should give Comer and his staff plenty of time to tune up the team and smooth out the rough spots.
"We'll look at the film on Monday," said Comer. "Now we can go out and work on things because now we have something to show them. we can work on getting things corrected."
Comer said McKenzie's team speed was good, especially early. But as the day wore on, both teams were a bit gassed. "But they didn't run away from us."
McKenzie brought a big crowd to the scrimmage, on a hot Friday night, 82 miles from home.
"We brought a good crowd down there," said Comer. "People are excited about football and the start of the season and that was good to see."
McKenzie continues its pre-season work next week. School starts Aug. 11 and the Rebs entertain the Trojans on Aug. 13. McKenzie will head to Alamo for the Sports Othopedic and Spine Kickoff Scrimmage at Crockett County High School on Aug. 15. McKenzie faces Hickman County in the Huntingdon Jamboree on Aug. 22 then hits the road to Dresden on Aug. 29 for the season opener.
