Fresh off a run to a 13-2 season and a table setting at the state championship game in Murfreesboro, there seems to be a desire to get things rolling in the McKenzie Rebel football camp.
Today, the Rebels will get that chance. The two-time defending Region 7A champs and the 2007 state runner-up McKenzie team will pad up and hit the practice field at noon. And for Comer and his troops, the first day of practice couldn't come too soon.
"The attitude has been good and I'd say the kids are kind of anxious and looking forward to getting started," said the Rebel coach, who begins ninth season at the helm.
The Rebels have some big shoes to fill. Thirteen seniors, including a Mr. Football finalist and four all-staters, But the understudies have had good tutors. They practiced 15 weeks last year against one of the best teams in the state. Additionally, there are plenty of starters back who are plenty battle scarred.
Couple that with a good spring workout and a strong off-season plan and the Rebels hope to make another run for the turf.
"We're going to look for depth on both sides of the ball," said Comer. "We have a lot of untested talent. We want our kids with ability competiting. I think with all the competition we are going to have for position, this year's camp should be fun."
The Rebels completed their passing league action last Thursday and had good runs at summer tournaments at Martin and Austin Peay. McKenzie reached the semifinals in Clarksville and the finals at Martin.
"We got better and the quarterbacks got better this summer in passing league," Comer said. "We were sporadic. Some days we would look good, other days we didn't look so good. But defensively, we looked good and had some depth."
Gone is Derek Carr and all his mileage as a passer and building depth and confidence at quarterback this fall will be a key. But Comer thinks his quarterback spot is okay as well as the offense.
"OUr quarterbacks have come a long way and we'll still be able to throw it around," the coach said. "We'll still run out of the spread offense. I'm looking forward to see what they can do."
There will be shoes to fill and there are a lot of players who have ability but little experience. Comer hopes this pre-season will give those kids a chance to show what they can do.
"Defensively, we should be good. We have depth in spots, but we want to see who will step up," Comer said. "We need to rise to the challenge. We are coming off a good spring so it should be fun."
The Rebels will hit the scrimmage road almost immediately. On Friday, Aug. 1, McKenzie visits McNairy Central. MHS will have about 12 days before its next tune up and that will be against James Counce's Dyersburg Trojans, who have been perennial 3A and 4A powers in West Tennessee. McKenzie will visit the Sports Orthopedic and Spine Kickoff Scrimmage in Alamo on Friday, Aug. 15. Then the Rebels will play in the Huntingdon Jamboree on Aug. 22.
The regular season begins on Aug. 29 when McKenzie heads to Rotary Field to face the Dresden Lions. Kickoff is 7:30 that night.
