Often, the first day of practice is an orientation and evaluation session for the players. Monday, for McKenzie Middle School, it was a day to evaluate how practice is conducted.
MMS coach Brad Chappell said he wasn't pleased with the tempo and the results of the first day of practice, but pointed the finger squarely at his own chest. With essentially a whole new team this season, Chappell did a few things differently in an attempt to see how players would respond and what players fit where. In the coach's mind, it didn't go very well.
"I'll take full blame for the way practice went today," said Chappell. "This time of year is always a challenge and part of the challenge is that you don't know what you are going get.
"We did a little trial and error today and wanted to try a few different things today, but we never seemed to get into a rhythm."
The Rebels, who are 22-5 over the past three seasons, three-time defending county champs and three-time post-season visitors, are looking to fill several vacancies. Chappell thinks he has some players who can do the job, but they haven't faced contact yet.
"It's like dumping a big puzzle on a table and finding the right pieces to fit in the right places," said the coach. "When the pieces don't fit, it doesn't look good. Today, we pieces in the wrong places."
So Tuesday, Chappell hopes to go back to what has worked in the past. He hopes to change up some personnel and do things a bit differently at practice.
"It was a typical first day and I'm optimistic that I'll get better," the coach said. "What we had was first-team offense running plays they didn't know against a second-team defense today that didn't know what it was doing yet, so it didn't look too good."
But there were some silver linings. The Rebels had nearly 40 out. Second, the execution on special teams was good.
"We did some good things," Chappell said. "We put i some of our special teams stuff today and it looked good for our first day. That was something to build on."
More than anything else, though, Chappell hopes the kids develop a good work ethic. The coach said that the kids need to learn how to practice.
"They need to know that we do those sprints and do all that hitting to help them, not because it's punishment," he said.
But the coach hopes that after the Rebels scrimmage with Martin on Thursday, he'll see progress with his club.
"I hope I'm pleased with the direction of our personnel," Chappell said. "Regardless of who's where, we're going to play hard, hustle and play tough. If we can get 11 kids to play like that, we'll have have a good team."
