Rebels show improvement at Inman

McKenzie catching on, getting better up front

By JIM STEELE
mckenzierebels.com

Maybe McKenzie's middle school football team didn't win, or even score, during its scrimmage at Paris-Inman Tuesday afternoon.

But this was a scrimmmage, not a regular-season game. The emphasis is on improvement, not necessarily winning. Inman outpaced the Rebel varsity 2-0, but MMS did get better.

Last week, Martin systematically dismantled McKenzie 5-0 in a scrimmage. The Rebels looked more like a football version of "Bad News Bears" than a football team. But the team went back into the film room, took a calm look at the problems, the alignments and personnel.

"We looked a lot better and we improved a lot," said MMS coach Brad chappell. "In a way, there were things that were very similar to last Thursday in that when we got all 11 players on the same page, we looked pretty good."

McKenzie was able to grind out yardage when it lined up properly. One of the big keys on Tuesday was the fact the line on both sides of the ball improved.

"The defensive line played a lot better and we had quite a few tackles for loss," said the coach. "You know, when your line does what it's supposed to do, it takes a lot of pressure off everyone else, your linebackers, your safeties."

Inman featured two former McKenzie standouts: Storme Hilliard and Jamari Curtis. And Chappell said they looked to be in mid-season form.

"They both looked good," said Chappell.

"We were outclassed as far as speed goes, but Inman is a good team," the coach said.

Chappell said he saw improvement in a lot of players as well.

"Chance Flippin was playing a lot better today and Bishop Williams ran the ball today and showed his speed real well," he said. "He hit the hole real hard and when the blocking broke down, made things happen on his own."

Offensive and defensive linemen Jay McCutcheon and Austin Paschall got better, the coach said. "They played a lot beetter and when the line does what it is supposed to do, it makes a difference."

The JV team topped Inman's B-team 3-2, which was an encouraging sign. The Rebel JV will face Henry around 7 p.m. in Saturday's middle school jamboree at Rebel Field. The Rebels battle a tough Lexington Minuteman team to end Saturday's pre-season fest, which will start at 2 p.m. when Inman and USJ square off. Martin will play Camden next, then Bruceton vs. Paris-Lakewood. Defending mckenzierebels.com Bowl champion Medina takes on Huntingdon in the next pairing. Dresden takes on West Carroll then McKenzie closes the event out. Advance tickets are $4 and available at participating schools. Local proceeds are kept by each individual school. Tickets at the gate are $5 and gate receipts will be shared among the participating schools.

As for the Rebels, Chappell said he was encouraged.

"We'll go back into the film room and take a look at what we did and try to fix some things in practice," he said. "We have three more good days of practice and I hope we can get some things done, but today , we took a good step."
