There was good news and bad news when one considers the football scrimmage between Martin and McKenzie Middle School football scrimmage Thursday afternoon.
The bad news was that a veteran Martin Middle School team picked apart a young McKenzie team and made it look easy. The good news was that McKenzie, in just its fourth day on the practice field, has time to pick up the pieces, regroup and figure out where to go from here.
Martin outscored McKenzie 5-0 in the scrimmage. And yes, while it is early August and not late September, MMS coach Brad Chappell was not too pleased with what he saw.
"We made a lot of unforced mistakes tonight," he said. "If we can fix those things, we'll be okay, but we need to play with more heart and learn how to adjust to adversity."
Things have come easy to the Rebels, who are 22-5 over the last three seasons and three-time defending champions. Adversity hasn't been in the MMS vocabulary over that span.
"Friday won't be a day off for us. We'll look at the film and go into a teaching mode where we show them what they did wrong without being emotionally charged up," said Chappell. "We will look at the film and fix what went wrong and then we need to find that desire, that willingness to get better."
It wasn't just completely awful for the Rebels. They had several instances where they raced for big yardage, made good step-in, step-out cuts, and completed a few passes.
"But it seemed like for every good play we'd make, we'd do something wrong on the next play and take a few steps back," Chappell said. "We need to find the right people in the right place on defense. Today, when Martin made some big runs, it was usually because we had one person in the wrong place."
Chappell said Bishop Williams played well and showed great speed in pursuit. He also praised Josh Owen, a seventh grader, for his efforts. The coach hinted that there may be a battle for numerous positions on both sides of the ball.
"Martin is a good team, but we need to learn to respond to adversity," the coach said. "It's disappointing today, but it's not like we expected Martin to lay down. They are tough every year and we have to come back, get better at practice and go back to the drawing board."
Martin will face another huge challenge and perhaps face a better team than Martin when it goes to Paris-Inman for scrimmage action Tuesday afternoon.
