Success has been old hat around the McKenzie Middle School football program the past three seasons.
In that time, the junior Rebels have amassed a 22-5 mark, including three post-season appearances and an undefeated regular season. Some might say the Rebels have been spoiled by a good run of size and talent lo these past few seasons. They'd be correct.
This year, McKenzie may not have the most size it has ever had and may not have the speed its had. But that doesn't mean the expectations are lower. And when the Rebels hit the practice field 3:30 p.m. Monday, Aug. 4 for their first workout, they'll hit the ground running.
"The emphasis will be finding a middle linebacker," said MMS coach Brad Chappell. "We have had (Colin) Vinson back there the past two years and we couldn't find one this spring."
There was a good reason for that. McKenzie struggled with inclement weather during its spring practice and basically only got a week in.
"If we can't find a middle linebacker, we may change schemes, but I prefer an odd-man front," said Chappell.
Just because this unit may be a bit smaller than those of the past three years doesn't mean the Rebels will be less physical.
"We'll line up like we usually do, but we'll adapt to our personnel," he said. "We didn't get to look at a whole lot this spring and we didn't get to evaluate what we are going to have. But we've changed on the fly before, so I know we can do that."
The coach said Alec Akin was named quarterback after spring practice was over and he's improved a lot over the summer. Chappell's concern is that Akin has just worked in shorts and he'll have to deliver in pads. Meanwhile, Chance Flippin will get a look at tailback. He had an 80-yard TD run that ended the game against Gleason and another 76-yard burst late in the game against Lakewood.
"He'll get an opportunity to show what he can do," said Chappell.
McKenzie won't have any creampuffs in the pre-season, either. The Rebels will face Martin, Paris-Inman and then Lexington in the jamboree.
"We'll be tested," said Chappell. "There won't be any easy scrimmages. But we can go the rest of the season and tell our kids that they won't face anyone any better than what we've seen in scrimmages."
McKenzie will host Martin in a scrimmage 5 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 7. The Rebels will hold their photo day Monday, Aug. 11. On Tuesday, Aug. 12, the Rebels head to Paris for their battle with Inman. McKenzie's JV will take on Henry in the sixth pairing of the jamboree on Saturday, Aug. 16. Then the varsity Rebs will battle Lexington in the jamboree finale.
McKenzie will crank it up for real when it hosts Dresden in the season-opener. Kickoff will be 6:30 p.m. Thursday at Rebel Field.
