So far so good for the McKenzie Rebel golf team. The Rebels recorded a 161 to cruise to victories six and seven Monday afternoon at Carroll Lake Golf Club. MHS outshot Crockett Co. by 23 strokes while Huntingdon finished a distant third. MHS won at 161, Crockett County shot 184 and Huntingdon scored a 210.
McKenzie's Tyler Bruce ha a great day, shooting a career-best 36 to earn medalist honors for the day.
"That was a real good day for him," said McKenzie golf coach Larry Joe Smith. "He's really starting to come on."
Tyler Holt is starting to piece together consistent solid rounds. He shot a pair of 42s before carding a 40 Monday.
"And at 6-6, he's got a lot to overcome," said Smith. "It's nice to know you can count on someone to be consistent and Tyler is starting to play like that."
Luke Anderson struggled to start the season, but appears to have found his stroke. He fired a 42. Alex Rider shot 47. Trevor Smith, a freshman, had an impressive 47 today as well.
"We're seeing improvement with Trevor," said the coach. "He's made some progress."
In girls' action, the Lady Rebels claimed their first victory of the season, topping Crockett County 104-136. Mary Nethaway recorde a 51 for girls' medalist honors. Ashley Bailus, returning to the links after a bout with mononucleosis, battled for a 53.
"Mary hit the ball well today, but it's not reflected in her score," said Smith. "It was good to see Ashley back out and it wasn't bad for her first time."
Freshman Phoebe Cunningam scored a 61 while sophomore Megan Hickman added a 64. The girls are now 1-2 on the season.
Smith said he's concerned about the next series of matches, which are on the road. McKenzie heads to Milan Tuesday to face Milan, Humboldt and Bradford. Thursday, the Rebels play at Sharon's Persimmon Hills course against host Greenfield, South Fulton and Dresden.
"we'll play Milan, Humboldt and Bradford at Milan, so we'll hit the ground running," said Smith. "But we need to see that. I'll be anxious to see how we respond."
