McKenzie High Schools' boys' golf team has gotten of to a sizzling start this year. The Rebels opened the season on the first day of school and captured a pair of victories over Gleason and Henry County at Carroll Lake.
Tuesday, the Rebs got a little bit better, winning a four-way with Huntingdon, Gleason and Clarksburg. McKenzie golf coach Larry Joe Smith said he has set a goal for his boys' team to come in under 170 in each match. Thus far, the Rebels are averaging 170.5, so they are close. Consider that Monday, No. 8 slot Brandon Sellers fired a 40 to lead the Rebels, but since he wasn't listed in the four scores that count, it was a good personal mark, but didn't really help the team.
Still, McKenzie shot a 175 to beat Gleason (186) and Henry County (192).
"We didn't play extremely well Monday," Smith said. "But the course is dry and hard right now and they are really only cutting the greens."
"Sellers was our low man, but we couldn't count him," lamented the coach.
Tyler Holt and Alex Rider each fired a 42 to lead the Rebs. Jackson Brooks carded a 45 and Tyler Bruce shot 46.
In girls' play, Mary Nethaway led the Lady Rebels with a 48. Freshman Phoebe Cunningham shot 61 and Megan Hickman added a 70. Henry County won the match 91-109. Gleason's Mallory James shot a 46.
Smith said the Rebels and Lady Rebs played better on Tuesday.
"We adjusted to the course better," he said. "And I saw some kids go through a couple of bad holes and then play through the adversity which I thought was good."
Tyler Bruce smoked the course with a 38 for medalist honors. But things didn't start well for him. He started off two over, but finished the last six holes one under. Holt scored a 42, but struggled on 18, where he carded an eight.
"But he didn't get his head down," said Smith. "He fought through it."
Rider, Brooks and Sellers each shot 43.
McKenzie fired a 166. Gleason was second at 198, Clarksburg 200 and Huntingdon 219.
In girls' play, Clarksburg edged the Lady Rebels 99-103. Cunningham trimmed nine strokes off her Monday score for a 52. Nethaway added a 51. Hickman had her best day as a Lady Rebel golfer, dropping 11 shots and coming in at 59.
"That was the first time Megan broke 60," said Smith. "Phoebe stepped up big for us today, too."
McKenzie has the rest of the week off, then hosts Camden and Crockett County at Carroll Lake Monday.
