McKenzie coach Larry Joe Smith has coached both boys and girls' basketball at McKenzie High School. He's the current golf coach. He led the Rebel baseball team to a third-place finish at the state tournament in 1987.
His middle school basketball team won a state title and his high school golf team was sixth in the state back in 2005.
Now, Smith will wear another hat for McKenzie. He was named girls' softball coach recently and will step in for Jessica Hardy, who was not rehired last year.
"I'm excited about it," Smith said. "I think we have a good, young team coming back."
Smith said it was too early to know exactly how things are going to shake out at this point, seven months before the start of the regular season.
"We'll take a look at things when the time comes and see how it goes," said Smith.
The Lady Rebels were 13-17 and four outs away from going to substate when a five-run rally by South Fulton in the opening round of the Region 7A tournament doomed them. South Fulton ended McKenzie's season with an 8-5 victory.
